Happy Birthday, Grins!

(Although Grins' birthday is in August, our summer was too busy to squeeze a birthday party in....so we celebrated in September.)

Despite the fact that he has never actually watched the movie, Grins is into all things Star Wars!  So naturally, he wanted to have a Star Wars party.  (Since I don't know much about Star Wars, I had to do a bit of research in my planning!)

We decided to do a "Jedi Training Academy", during which each "Padowon" learner had to complete a series of 'quests' in order to earn the rank of "Jedi".  Fortunately the Mr. agreed to be the "Jedi Master" to lead the Padowon through their training (since I had NO idea about anything Star Wars!)

Task 1: Padowon learners put on their official brown robes.

Task 2: While we waited for everyone to arrive, the Padowon created R2D2 Robot Helpers
(out of paper cups).  They had a great time with this (unfortunately I didn't get a picture of the finished project).

Task 3: Padowon learners had to 'restore order to the galaxy' by pinning the 'bomb' on the ship...while blindfolded!  This was a 'hit', of course! (pardon the pun)

Task 4: Melt the "carbonite" (ice) to free Han Solo:

This took quite a bit longer than I had anticipated and required patience and focus...the padowon did very well!

(Another picture showing "Han Solo" - I know he isn't supposed to have blonde hair - but I didn't have any dark haired toys to freeze...)

Task 5: (Not pictured) Obstacle Course which included jumping through a sarlac pit, diving through a wormhole in the Galaxy, and using the force to fight a battle droid.

Task 6: Each padowon was given his own light saber and instructed to use "the force" and their lightsaber to keep their lightsaber training droid in the air.

Task 7: Destroy the Death Star (pinata).

The children and I created a wonderful pinata out of paper mache the week leading up to the party...but due to the high humidity, the final layer did not dry in time.  Fortunately, the Mr. found a pumpkin pinata and was able to do a little 'makeover' to transform it into the Death Star. (Hence the orange undertones)

Angel aka Princess Leia gives it a go....

Proof that the Padowon successfully completed their task: the Death Star was obliterated!

Final Task: Obtain Nourishment.  The padowon learners worked up a healthy appetite, and enjoyed some R2D2 cake and Yoda, Storm Trooper, Boba Fett and Darth Vader cupcakes!

Grins was thrilled to receive some Star Wars and Ninjago Lego sets!

All in all - the party was a success!  Each padowon received his Jedi Certificate and a bag of sundry star wars items to take home.  I think it is safe to say that Grins had a great time!!

After the party:  Grins fell asleep writing his Thank You cards - I guess Jedi training really wore him out! :)

Once his Thank Yous were written, he set to work putting together his new Lego sets!

This actually happened before the party, but I just had to include this picture of my best helpers- they helped cut out the fondant for the cupcakes!
